SUMMIT TWP — One person sustained burns and was taken to a hospital after a bus caught fire in the parking lot of Steighner Crane Service on Simon Drive in Summit Township late on Friday night, Sept. 13.

The incident was first reported shortly after 10 p.m. Friday.

A group brought the vehicle to Steighner’s to have the bus retrofitted for racing. The fire started when the group was using a grinder to remove the seats from inside the bus.

“We’re trying to prep the buses for bus racing, and we’re using torches to cut the seats out of it,” said Clayton Dressler.

“It was probably from the sparks for cutting out the seat,” said Sam Kasmarik. “We all walked away for a second, we came back, and it was on fire.”

Kasmarik added that the flooring of the bus is what may have touched off the fire.

The Herman Volunteer Fire Company, located just a mile away, responded to the scene along with the Butler Ambulance Service.

Aside from the one burn injury, no one else was injured, and Dressler added the one injured person “... is going to be okay.”

No one from the Herman Volunteer Fire Company was available to comment after the fire.
