Karns City football drops first game of season in wild shootout vs DuBois

KARNS CITY — While Karns City generated 21 first downs and more than 400 yards in a football shootout with DuBois on Friday night at Diehl Stadium, it was a bizarre defensive play that gave the Gremlins a shot at victory.

Looking to add to a 46-43 lead by culminating a six-minute drive late in the fourth quarter, the visiting Beavers faced fourth-and-goal from the KC 5-yard line. Quarterback Trey Wingard retreated under heavy pressure, continuing to circle backwards before Gremlins defensive tackle Sean Slaugenhoupt corralled high at the KC 40 for a 36-yard loss.

With 3:25 remaining, the Gremlins (2-1) had new life. Quarterback Cole Johnston scrambled inside the DuBois 30 on fourth-and-long, but came up short of the sticks as DuBois (3-1) held on for the 46-43 win.

“There was a fireworks show for these people down here tonight,” DuBois coaching TJ Wingard said. “We knew we’d be in for something like this.”

Both teams marched up and down the field most of the night. The Gremlins ran 73 plays — 58 of them on the ground — while DuBois ran 54 plays, relying primarily on a vaunted passing game. Wingard threw for 354 yards and five touchdowns, connecting with four different receivers for scores.

“We threw everything we could at them,” KC coach Joe Sherwin said. “We mixed up coverages, switched guys off. ... They just execute so well. We just couldn’t stop them.”

Johnston’s 7-yard scoring run with 12 seconds left before halftime was KC’s fourth touchdown of the second quarter. It also gave the Gremlins a 36-33 lead heading into the second half.

Dubois scored on the first possession of the third period, Wingard completing a 62-yard drive with a 17-yard TD pass to Isaiah Korney. The Gremlins went three-and-out, then allowed DuBois running back Danny Dixon to score on a 21-yard run for a 46-36 lead.

Karns City responded by driving inside the DuBois 30, but a fumble was recovered by the Beavers’ Hunter Allman to kill that possession.

“Falling behind at that point” Sherwin said, “we never recovered from that.”

Johnston, a sophomore, had a stellar game for the Gremlins, throwing for 138 yards and two scores, running for 136 yards and two more touchdowns.

“This was going to be one of those games where we’d have to make a lot of plays on offense,” Johnston said. “This was just back and forth. We came up short at the end, but we showed a lot of fight.”

Sherwin referred to Johnston’s effort Friday as “sort of a coming out party for him. He was outstanding.”

Hunter Scherer rushed for 109 yards and two TDs for Karns City.

“Karns City’s offense just keeps coming at you,” TJ Wingard said. “Their offensive line keeps blocking people back. I’m not all all surprised by what their quarterback did.

“We could see on film that kid is going to be something special.”

Karns City travels to Punxsutawney on Sept. 20. The Gremlins will make up their game against Saint Marys — postponed by inclement weather Sept. 6 — on Oct. 25 at Diehl Stadium.
