Teacher made a difference

O this learning, what a thing it is! … Shakespeare “The Taming of the Shrew”

I was saddened to learn of the recent death of one of my former high school teachers, Peter Mantzaris (Butler Eagle, Sept. 9, Page 6). The obituary included the understated line, “He was well liked by his students, who felt he made a difference in their lives.”

As a member of the 1978 Butler High School Junior Class, I innocently wandered into Mr. Mantzaris’ Introduction to Shakespeare without expectations. I knew little of the Bard. What I encountered was a teacher who knew his stuff, truly loved his subject, and was able to share that knowledge and excitement with his class. He opened a whole new world for me. I try to attend Shakespeare performances as often as I am able, an interest I can trace directly back to Mr. Mantzaris’ class.

We have all worked with people who, at times, simply go through the motions. If we are fortunate, we meet a few people who genuinely love what they do. Forty-six years ago, Mr. Mantzaris was one of those people who, by the grace of God, crossed my path.

“He was well liked by his students, who felt he made a difference in their lives.” … Count me in!

May he rest in peace.

John Reddick, Butler
