For the fourth straight year, the Rotary Club of Zelienople will celebrate the International Day of Peace with a ceremony at Zelienople Community Park on East Beaver Street on Sept. 20.

The ceremony begins at 4 p.m. at the park’s gazebo, where Rotary Club members Tom and Marie Grant commissioned a peace pole to be set up at the park. During the ceremony, 1,000 paper cranes will hang from the gazebo in memory of the Grants, members of Rotary who died in December 2020.

Students from Connoquenessing Valley Elementary School will create signs to promote peace and kindness, which will be displayed throughout the park during the ceremony.

Just as she did last year, Rotary member Emily Budney will read a children’s book, while Robin Fleming, owner of Room to Grow book and toy store in Zelienople, will tell an inspiring story.

Toward the end of the ceremony, doves — a universal symbol of peace and unity — will be released. Ken Haselrig, of Dovecote Missions will again oversee the dove release.

After the ceremony, children will have the opportunity to take part in an origami crane-making class.

“We are honored to offer the community a place to gather and observe the International Day of Peace for the fourth year in a row,” said Sara Rice, of the Zelienople Rotary. “We believe that the program we have created offers a little something for everyone, and hope that community members of all ages will join us for this annual event.”
