James Ray Jr.
James E. Ray Jr., aka Jim, Jimmy, or JT, 46, of Harmony, left for his next big adventure on Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2024. His departure leaves a void as expansive as his ego — almost the size of Texas, but not quite. Known for his immovable stubbornness and the kind of kick that could send a mule rethinking its career, James was the man who lived as he left: boldly and unapologetically.
His sense of humor was so extraordinary that it could have been patented, though it might have required a disclaimer for sharp edges. Now, his laugh will be missed at every whiskey bar and motorcycle rally he frequented, where his magnetic personality was the main event. James’ big heart was evident in everything he did, and he had a larger-than-life presence.
His work ethic was as formidable as his stubborn streak. A proud Army veteran, James carried the same determination and discipline from his service into every aspect of his life. He was also known for making sure everyone knew he was right and they were wrong — whether they wanted to hear it or not. When he wasn’t busy proving his point or traveling the world, he loved hiking, often dragging his family along on trails that, according to him, were uphill both ways. James loved hard and made sure there was never any doubt about whether he loved or hated you.
In his world, you weren’t just a friend, you were family too. He knew family wasn’t just about blood, but about those he loved. He leaves behind his wife, Cora; his kids, April, Marshall and Max; and the rest of his family, including Joanne, Jamie, Joe and Ed, along with many others. They will have to find their way through life without the benefit of his unique brand of advice and his insistence on tackling every hiking trail, motorcycle route and whiskey barrel.
Popular wherever he roamed, James could have probably been elected to office had he ever paused his globe-trotting and outdoor adventures long enough. He was the kind of guy who’d give you the shirt off his back — if you could manage to catch him standing still.
In lieu of flowers, James would have preferred a round of whiskey in his honor. And if you want to truly pay tribute, take a hike or a ride on your motorcycle and remember: He’d still be offering unsolicited tips if he were here. Rest in peace, James. Your legacy of laughter, stubbornness and grand tales will ensure you are remembered as vibrantly as your ego was — forever.
