Ohio man charged with holding resident hostage while selling drugs from Butler home
An Ohio man has been charged with holding a Butler man hostage in his home for three days while he sold drugs from the house.
Jamel R. Patton Sr., 32, of Youngstown, is being held in the county prison in lieu of $500,000 bail while he awaits his preliminary hearing on three felony charges of possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver and misdemeanor counts of false imprisonment, false identification and possession of a controlled substance.
Butler police filed the charges following a Sept. 13 incident at a home on Third Avenue.
The alleged victim called police from a business on West Cunningham Street. He told police he fled to the business from his home where a man refused to let him leave for three days while the man sold drugs from the home, according to an affidavit. He told police he managed to sneak out of his house and call for help.
Police told the Butler man to remain at the business while they went to his home to investigate. Officers heard someone inside the home, entered and found Patton in the bathroom, according to the affidavit.
When asked to identify himself, Patton gave officers a false name, but police confirmed his name through his photo identification from Ohio, according to the affidavit.
Patton was found in possession of multiple bags of suspected controlled substances when he was searched before being placed in a holding cell, police said. The bags contained 4.71 grams of suspected fentanyl, 6.31 grams of suspected crack cocaine, 6.34 grams of suspected methamphetamine, two oxycodone chloride pills, five alprazolam pills, one amphetamine pill and 13 unidentified blue pills, according to the affidavit.
The Butler man identified the man as “Sir,” who police said they know to be Patton. He told police that Patton physically interfered with him leaving his home multiple times over about three days, according to the affidavit.
He told police that Patton told him he had better not leave, he was not allowed to leave, he would rip his head off if he left, pushed him against a wall and told him about the consequences he would face if he left, according to the affidavit.
