WWII Butler vet receives military funeral procession

Martin Funeral Home directors place World War II veteran Arcangelo “Arc” Carosi's casket under a giant American Flag hoisted up by the Butler Township Volunteer Fire District before of a ceremony conducted by Joseph T. Black VFW Post 249 and American Legion Post 778 outside St. Conrad Roman Catholic Church on Tuesday, Sept. 17. Morgan Phillips/Butler Eagle

The funeral procession for 100-year-old WWII veteran Arcangelo “Arc” Carosi is not an “everyday occurrence,” according to Butler Township Commissioner Sam Zurzolo.

Carosi, who died Sept. 9, was the eldest of six children of northern Italian immigrants, according to his obituary, and was escorted to St. Conrad Roman Catholic Church on Buttercup Road from Martin Funeral Home on Center Avenue by Butler Township police.

Butler Township Volunteer Fire District raised a flag for the ceremony, Zurzolo said, while the Evans City American Legion performed the firing detail. Members of the Joseph T. Black VFW Post 249 and American Legion 778, both in Butler, also assisted during the ceremony, according to Zurzolo.

Carosi, who was drafted into the U.S. Army at 19 in 1943, was “one of the last remaining WWII vets,” Zurzolo said. Carosi was the first of his four brothers to serve in WWII, and he spent nearly two years stationed at the Chabua Air Station in India.

Arcangelo “Arc” Carosi, 100, of Butler, passed away Monday, Sept. 9, 2024, at Butler Memorial Hospital.
