High school sports roundup: 4 North Catholic golfers advance to final round of WPIAL Class 2A championships

Riley Kontul sits seventh after the first day of the WPIAL Class 2A Girls Golf Individual Championship with a round of 93.

The North Catholic freshman is the top Butler County golfer so far through 18 holes, as the WPIAL held the start of its individual championships in Girls 2A and 3A and Boys 2A.

In boys play, Class 3A’s first round will be held Tuesday, and all four final rounds will be held Sept. 30 through Oct. 2 at various locations. The top 36 golfers in all four meets qualify for the final round.

Izzy Engelka, a junior for the Trojanettes, shot 100 to place 13th through Day 1.

On the Boys 2A side, North Catholic’s Ben Kandravy sits t-23rd with an 8 and will be joined by Chris Faber (t-32nd, 85). Freeport is sending three golfers to the final round: Stephen Evans, Ethan Crooks and Cam Zigo all tied for 26th through 18 holes with an 84.

No local golfers qualified for the 3A girls championship.

KSAC Mega Match (girls) — Moniteau’s Sophee Hazlet and Cara Roxberry both fired a 56 to lead the Warriors’ effort at Foxburg Country Club.

Moniteau finished with 169 strokes, 15 behind Cranberry for first place.

Girls tennis

Seneca Valley improved its record to 7-6, edging host Montour by a final of 3-2.

Anna Coon won in No. 3 singles for the Raiders. The doubles tandems of Gianna Guandolo/Sydney Blucher and Emily Merola/Hannah Kenyon also were victorious.

Girls soccer

Katelyn VanDyke scored all three goals in Karns City’s 3-0 win over Clearfield.

Assists came from Sophia Bonetto (2) and Layla Colsey. Savanna Prescott earned the shutout for the Gremlins (9-1).

Freeport 9, Highlands 0 — The Yellowjackets received goals from nine different players — Ella McConville, Peyton Los, CeCe Schlegel, Elena Jenkins, Camryn Woods, Nia DiSanti, Alyssa Cooper, Tess Hanak and Jocelynn Johns.

Alyssa Alcorn and Macey Edwards combined for the shutout.

Girls volleyball

Clarion-Limestone 3, Moniteau 0 — The Warriors bowed to the Lions by scores of 25-19, 25-9, 25-19.

Bella Hernandez tallied six kills and two blocks while Sydney Bayless and Sayge Brunst combined for five kills.
