Abbot Leo Schlosser

Abbot Leo R. Schlosser, retired abbot of Holy Trinity Monastery, fell asleep in the Lord on Friday, Sept. 13, 2024, at Mt. Macrina Manor, Uniontown, Pa.

He was born on April 23, 1933, in Akron, Ohio, the youngest child of Joseph M. and Juliana (Toth) Schlosser.

He received his elementary education at St. Bernard School and his high school education at St. Mary High School, both in Akron, Ohio. He entered St. Vincent Seminary, Latrobe, Pa., and then transferred to St. Bernard Seminary in Alabama, for his monastic and priestly formation. He was ordained a priest at St. Leo Benedictine Abbey, St. Leo, Fla., by Archbishop Joseph P. Hurley. Following ordination, he received bi-ritual faculties to serve the Byzantine-Ruthenian Byzantine Catholic Church.

Throughout his active priestly ministry, he served as novice master and prior at St. Leo Abbey. In addition, he taught at the Prep School and Junior College. He served numerous parishes throughout Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania. He gave many retreats and missions. In 1993, he was elected hegumen (abbot) of Holy Trinity Byzantine Catholic Monastery, Butler. He retired from active priestly ministry in 2017, but continued to offer words of encouragement which impacted so many people.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Barbara, Juliana, Stephen, Rosalia, Joseph, Ivan, Mary Ann, George, Bernard, Rita, Norbert and Richard.

Surviving him are numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, parishioners and friends.

SCHLOSSER — Friends of Abbot Leo R. Schlosser, who died Friday, Sept. 13, 2024, will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24, at St. John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Church, 185 E. Main St., Uniontown, Pa. Parastas will be celebrated at 7 p.m.

The funeral will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, at St. John Church by Metropolitan William Skurla. Interment will follow at Mount Macrina Cemetery, Uniontown.

Arrangements are under the care of CRAWFORD FUNERAL HOME, Hopwood.
