Butler City Council is advertising for bids to replace the Butler Bureau of Fire’s garage doors and controls, which is planned to be paid for by a municipal fire department capital grant.

The city received $78,000 from the 2023 Pennsylvania Office of the State Fire Commissioner Municipal Fire Department Capital Grant, according to Chief Chris Switala.

The garage doors currently on the building are about 20 years old, but they still work. However, Switala said they are in need of replacement.

“Within the last couple years, there has been several springs that have broken that we’ve had to replace,” Switala said. “There have been wiring issues and so this will be to redo all of our controls and everything.”

Butler City Councilman Larry Christy, who brought the motion to council Wednesday, Sept. 25, said the fire station has had to replace garage doors in the past.

“The original doors were built with glass, they got so heavy that they were pulling the tracks out of the wall,” Christy said.

Switala said the grant was a relatively new program by the state, and the money may have to be allocated by the end of this year. The garage door replacement should be done by the end of the year, Switala added.
