High school sports roundup: North Catholic tennis doubles teams make WPIALs; Slippery Rock football falls

North Catholic’s Katie Hardy and Brea Kelley won the WPIAL Section 3-2A girls tennis doubles title Thursday, defeating teammates Evie Marche and Samantha Falcon in straight sets 6-2, 6-1 at Greensburg Racquet Club.

Both duos will compete in the WPIAL tournament, which begins Wednesday at North Allegheny High School.

Football

Harbor Creek scored four touchdowns in the first quarter and cruised to a 35-10 victory over visiting Slippery Rock.

Trailing 28-0, the Rockets (1-5) received an 80-yard touchdown pass from Fred Campagna to Owen Long. Zach Lasko then booted a 35-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 18 points in the second quarter.

Harbor Creek’s Gavin Zillman returned a pair of punts for touchdowns.

Girls volleyball

Kenzie Kurtz had 11 kills and teammate Karlee Buterbaugh nine kills and 13 digs to lead Knoch to a sweep of Deer Lakes by scores of 25-16, 25-15, 25-21.

Jess Farbacher added seven kills and Alena Tekely 12 service points and 19 assists for the Knights (5-4, 2-3).

Redbank Valley 3, Moniteau 1 — Sophia Fleeger tallied 28 assists and four kills, but the Warriors fell on the road.

Bella Hernandez had seven kills and six aces for Moniteau, Lily Staab seven kills and aces, Emily Matz six kills. Sydney Bayless added four kills, four blocks and three aces in defeat.

The Bulldogs claimed victory by scores of 25-18, 19-25, 25-22, 25-23.

Clarion-Limestone 3, Karns City 0 — The Gremlins struggled early and could not recover in this loss by scores of 25-9, 25-21, 25-13.

Naomi Venesky had four kills and three blocks, Addison Fox seven assists and six digs.

Boys soccer

Angelo Porco’s hat trick led Freeport’s 10-1 victory over Leechburg.

The Yellowjackets (5-5-2, 3-4-2) also got goals from Ryan Sutara, Carson Rowley, Nate Watson, Liam Dunn, JJ Nicolls, Owen Seagriff and Conner Wessel.

Mars 3, Kiski Area 0 — Logan Coone scored two goals for the Planets (8-1-3, 6-1-2), who received a shutout in goal by Luke Hagen.
