Neubert: 47th City of Pittsburgh Great Race comes to Point State Park

This Sunday marks the 47th year for one of the area’s most popular events.

Richard S. Caliguiri City of Pittsburgh Great Race, partnering with P3R, will welcome thousands for its annual 5K/10K dash to Point State Park from either Shenley Park, the 10K start, or Oakland for the 5K.

P3R presents other large running events in Pittsburgh throughout the year, including the Pittsburgh Marathon, EQT 10-Miler and GAP Relay. They also partner with charitable organizations in presenting Steelers Run and Walk, Pittsburgh Penguins 6.6K Run and Family Walk, FlyBy 5K and Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh Foundation Walk for Children.

At 8 a.m. Oct. 5, P3R will host Running Club Rally-The Community Run at its headquarters on River Avenue, Pittsburgh. The event, now in its seventh year, promises “a morning of running, networking and community” as local running clubs come together to share the love of running.

More than 10 running clubs of all types will be represented at the event: City of Bridges, a Road Runners Club of America chapter with multiple run choices weekly and pacing groups for marathon training; and Still I Run, a North Park bi-weekly run/walk group that emphasizes the mental health benefits of running. New for this year, P3R is offering grants for running clubs of more than 50 members in attendance at the Running Club Rally.

Caitlyn Manduley, Community Participation and Activation Director of P3R, expects more than 100 runners and walkers to attend the event. Caitlyn calls the event “a great way to be part of the running community.”

“You don’t have to be part of a club to attend,” she said. “And it’s free.”

There are no age or ability restrictions for this kid and walker-friendly event, though it’s not suitable for dogs or strollers. Participants are encouraged to arrive early to secure a spot in the parking lot. There’s also on-street parking for overflow.

If you haven’t signed up online at p3r.org/events/running-club-rally-the-community-run?day=10-05-2024, day-of-event registration begins at 7 a.m. There will be a group pre-race warm-up led by Yoga 6 prior to the mass start at 8 a.m.

The Community Run features a loop course of approximately 3 miles. Runners can choose to run 3, 6 or 10 miles in consecutive loops with water stops at the start/finish area.

Remember, this is a fun group run/walk. Traffic will not shut down. There will be City of Bridges pacers leading several paces 7:30 per mile and slower. City Girls Who Walk Pittsburgh will guide a walking pace group, too. Participants are encouraged to download a course map from the registration site just in case they want to go at their own pace or check out some sights along the route.

Post-race refreshments include water and fruit. Several vendors will be on hand as well, including 1-11 Juice Bar and Lucid Juice serving acai bowls.

The Running Club Rally part of the event continues at P3R with info about local clubs, gyms and fitness centers and P3R programs such as Corporate Challenge and Run for a Reason Charity Program. Runners can register for future P3R events such as the upcoming EQT 10-Miler and Pittsburgh Marathon at a discounted price. There’s also a 4RUN2 Garage Sale with deals on merchandise and gear for all levels of runners.
