Summer officially turned to autumn on Sunday, Sept. 22. Unofficially, the transition begins this week in most of Pennsylvania, as the leaves begin their annual changing of colors.

The state’s Department of Conservation and Natural Resources released their first weekly fall foliage report of this season on Thursday afternoon, Sept. 26.

According to the map, the leaves in all but nine of the 67 counties in Pennsylvania are showing signs of color change.

Six counties, all of which are in the Philadelphia area, are still listed as “no change,” while Somerset County, Wayne County and Pike County are listed as “approaching best color” — meaning that leaves in those three counties are the closest to peak color this week.

The report notes specifically that trees in the southwest corner of the state are noticeably beginning to turn.

“Virginia creeper vines are bright red and spicebush shrubs are beginning to turn yellow,” reads the report. “Many red maple and black gum trees are well into their fall color transition, showcasing vibrant reds and oranges.

“Peak throughout most of the district is expected in the next two to three weeks.”
