High school sports roundup: North Catholic’s Riley Kontul finishes 5th at WPIALs, makes PIAA golf tournament

North Catholic’s Riley Kontul was the top Butler County finisher during a soggy WPIAL Class 2A Girls Golf Individual Championship on Monday at Butler Country Club.

The freshman finished fifth with a two-day total of 41-over, qualifying for the PIAA championships starting Oct. 21. She shot 20-over in the final round. Teammate Izzy Engleka finished 14th with a 60-over (32-over for the day).

Shady Side Academy’s Alyssa Zhang won the 2A gold with an 11-over, including an even par final round. The 3A girls champion is Peters Twp.’s Ellie Benson, who shot a 2-over Monday at Butler Country Club to finish 5-over overall.

The top nine golfers in 2A and top seven in 3A qualified for the PIAA championships.

Boys golf

The WPIAL released Tuesday’s tee times for the Class 3A individual boys golf championships, which will be held at Oakmont Country Club starting at 10 a.m.

Local athletes and their tee times are: Seneca Valley’s Anthony Cardosi, 10 a.m.; Mars’ Will Campbell, 10:08; SV’s Marcos Lopez, 10:32; Butler’s Levi McClellan, 10:56; SV’s Tyler Garvin, 11:04; Mars’ Lukas Singh, 11:28; and SV’s Brody Pirt, 11:36.

Girls tennis

The WPIAL girls tennis doubles championship brackets were released Monday.

Two North Catholic pairs are the lone Butler County representatives this year, competing in the Class 2A tournament. Section champions Brea Kelley and Katie Hardy are the No. 2 seed and will face No. 15 Valley’s Alexandra Thomey and Karrigan Thomey in the first round. And NC’s Samantha Falcon and Evelyn Marche, who lost in the sectional final to their teammates, are No. 8 with a first-round matchup against No. 9 Mt. Pleasant’s Ryleigh Drzal and Danica Trainer.

The first three rounds of the tournament will be held starting 11 a.m. Wednesday, with 2A at North Allegheny High School and 3A at Bethel Park High School. The championship and third-place matches will be held at Bethel Park High School 1 p.m. Thursday.

The top seed in 2A is Quaker Valley’s Kirsten Close and Avery Allan; the top seed in 3A is Mt. Lebanon’s Jackie Tang and Michelle Yang.
