High school sports roundup: North’s Kelley-Hardy duo reach WPIAL 2A girls tennis doubles final

North Catholic’s Brea Kelley and Katie Hardy breezed through their first three opponents in Wednesday’s WPIAL Class 2A girls tennis doubles tournament, held at North Allegheny High School.

The Trojanettes’ tandem, seeded No. 2, will face Quaker Valley’s Kirsten Close/Avery Allan, the top seed, for the championship at 1 p.m. Thursday at Bethel Park High School.

Kelley and Hardy did not surrender a point in the first two rounds, defeating Valley’s Alexandra Thomey/Karrigan Thomey and Aquinas Academy’s Alexandra Swift/Katherine Gillespie by identical 10-0 scores.

In the semifinal round, Kelley and Hardy dominated Greensburg Central Catholic’s Sasha Hoffman/Emilia Longhi 6-1, 6-0.

The Trojanettes also had the tourney’s No. 8 seed, Samantha Falcon/Evie Marche. The pair won a first-round match before bowing to Close and Allan 10-3 in the quarterfinals.

Seneca Valley 5, Baldwin 0 — The Raiders won their final match of the regular season and improved their overall record to 8-6 ahead of the WPIAL Class 3A team playoffs next week.

Alaina Brody, Sydney Blucher and Cady Shea each won in singles play. Also contributing to the win were doubles teams of Gianna Guandolo/Anna Coon and Olivia Hein/Emily Merola.

Girls soccer

Cecelia Wolford, Kara Lubinsky, Lucia Leyland and Sydney Patterson all had two goals as Butler dispatched North Hills 10-0. Kat McGuire and Lydia Mohney also scored.

Fox Chapel 2, Mars 1 — The Foxes tallied the game-winner with less than five minutes remaining in the game.

The Planets fell to 11-2 overall, 7-2 in section play.

North Catholic junior Ben Kandravy defeated Greensburg Salem’s Luke Sikora on the second playoff hole at the WPIAL Class 2A individual championship at Sewickley Heights Golf Club, securing the 18th and final transfer spot to the upcoming state tournament.

Kandravy tallied 162 strokes in the two-day event, including 79 on Wednesday.

McGuffey’s Logan Crowe won the district championship with a 148.

North’s Chris Faber (23rd) and Eric Proie (30th) also competed, as did Freeport’s Ethan Crooks (26th), Cam Zigo (34th) and Stephen Evans (35th).

Boys soccer

Angelo Amelio netted a pair of goals and Matthew Liscinsky and Arthur Mendonca added on in North Catholic’s 4-0 win at Highlands. Trojans goalkeeper Drew Schedlbauer had a penalty kick save in the triumph.

Slippery Rock 3, Grove City 1 — Nick Olshanski, Max Kovacik and Wade Freehling found the net for the Rockets while Freehling, Kovacik and Zach Lasko tallied helpers.

Girls volleyball

Marissa Metzka tallied 13 kills and Ashley Ragan nine blocks to lead Slippery Rock to a sweep of rival Grove City.

Adison Novad added eight kills and Zoey Pokrantz 16 assists.

The Rockets won by scores of 25-16, 25-17 and 25-23.

Knoch 3, Laurel 0 — Karlee Buterbaugh led the way for the Knights (6-5, 2-3), who won by scores of 25-22, 25-20 and 25-10.

Kenzie Kurtz had six kills and four blocks in the victory.

Cross Country

Karns City’s Griffin Booher, Noah Weiland and Dmitri Weckerly took the top three spots to pace the Gremlin boys to a narrow 29-30 win against West Shamokin.

Booher’s winning time was 18 minutes, 52 seconds.
