High school sports roundup: WPIAL releases team tennis, golf brackets; Moniteau volleyball sweeps

The WPIAL released the Class 3A and 2A girls tennis team championships brackets Thursday.

North Catholic holds the top seed in 2A after a strong season that saw its best doubles pair of Katie Hardy and Brea Kelley finish runner-up in the WPIAL doubles championship Thursday afternoon.

The Trojanettes open the first round Tuesday at Cranberry Township Park against the winner of No. 16 Aquinas Academy and No. 17 Ellwood City.

The 2A championships will be held Oct. 16 at Washington & Jefferson College’s Janet L. Swanson Tennis Center. The WPIAL will send the top three teams to the PIAA tournament in 2A

In 3A, No. 12 Mars will visit fifth-seed Fox Chapel at 3 p.m. Monday in the first round, and No. 13 Seneca Valley visits fourth-seed Upper St. Clair at 3 p.m. The WPIAL sends three teams to the PIAA tournament in 3A.

Boys & girls golf

The WPIAL released the 34 teams who qualified for the boys and girls team tennis championships. The first round will be held Tuesday at various locations, with the final round Oct. 10 at Cedarbrook Gold Golf Course.

Seneca Valley, which had four golfers make the individual tournament, qualified for the 3A boys team championship and will play its first round at Indian Run Golf Club. North Catholic’s boys qualified in 2A and will play at The Links at Spring Church in the first round.

North Catholic is the lone Butler County team to make either girls tournament. The Trojanettes head to Cedarbrook Red Golf Course on Oct. 10 for the 2A championship, a one-day event.

Girls volleyball

Lily Staab had eight kills and seven aces to pace Moniteau to a 3-0 victory against Union.

Bella Hernandez added seven kills and five aces. Sydney Bayless tallied five kills and four blocks, Natalee Klix six kills.

Kolstin Wetzel had four kills and two blocks for Union.

The Warriors dominated the Damsels by scores of 25-16, 25-13 and 25-17.

Knoch 3, Highlands 0 — Jess Farbacher had 16 service points, eight kills and 11 digs for the Knights in their 25-12, 25-16, 25-10 win.

Karlee Buterbaugh added nine kills for Knoch (7-5, 3-3).

Redbank Valley 3, A-C Valley 0 — The Falcons dropped this match by scores of 25-21, 25-17 and 25-15.

Malia Page and Nichole Wingard both had four kills for A-C Valley.

Butler 3, Seneca Valley 1 — Butler downed the Raiders with a diverse attack, as Raina Lewandowski (11), Audrey Lehman (10) and Brynn Cornibe (10) combined for 31 kills.

Julia Mason tallied 32 assists for Butler, which won by scores of 25-19, 25-19, 17-25 and 25-15.

Girls soccer

Hanna Dailey scored Karns City’s lone goal in a 2-1 loss to Redbank Valley.

Boys soccer

Austin Friedline scored two goals in Knoch’s 5-0 win over Kiski Area.

Jacob Murdie, Tye West and Duncan Schilpp also scored while Will Parisi contributed a pair of assists.
