Portersville/Franklin firefighter returns to duty after being struck by vehicle
Just days after being struck by a vehicle while responding to a separate vehicle accident in Portersville, a volunteer firefighter from the Prospect-Franklin Township Volunteer Fire Department has returned to duty.
The firefighter, whose identity has not been released, was controlling traffic on Perry Highway/Route 19, after emergency crews were called there to respond to a two-vehicle accident on Monday, Sept. 30. According to fire Chief Nathan Blackwood, the firefighter was struck by an SUV about 20 minutes after he arrived on the scene.
“He was directing traffic ... for approximately 20 minutes prior to being struck,” Blackwood said. “He had waved traffic from West Portersville Road out onto 19 when the SUV attempting to go northbound on 19 struck him.”
Blackwood said there was concern the firefighter suffered a fractured hand, but it was ultimately determined he sustained no serious injuries. He was taken to AHN Wexford for evaluation and released later that day.
