Ella Ekas

Ekas

Ella Louise “Weez” Ekas was born in Brookville, Pa., on April 8, 1942, to the late Mary Malacarne and William Hobbs Kline. She passed away on Thursday, Oct. 3, 2024, at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.

She graduated from Brookville High School in 1960 and Grove City College in 1964. She taught in the business department of Knoch High School and in Maryland and West Virginia before starting a 24-year career at Slippery Rock High School. She was very much adored by her accounting and typing students.

She married Dale L. Ekas on Aug. 20, 1966, and they became Slippery Rock residents in 1969, where they lived for the remainder of their lives. He preceded her in death, passing on Dec. 1, 2003.

She was a member of the Slippery Rock United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school for many years and was Sunday school superintendent. She served on the finance committee and was chairperson for years as well as treasurer of the church. Her work with United Methodist Women was always very special to her.

She loved the friends she had in Slippery Rock. She enjoyed playing bridge and badminton with them. After her retirement, she became devoted to the work of the Slippery Rock Feed My Sheep Food Cupboard as a helper and treasurer — a place where she made dear friends.

The very best times of her life were spent with her children and grandchildren. She is survived by her children, Christine Ekas of Slippery Rock and Jeffrey and Kelly Ekas of Orlando, Fla.

She also is survived by the six grandchildren she treasured, Alyssa, Samantha and Noah Stainer, and Mason, Michael and Molly Ekas; her sister, Connie and her husband, Lanny Fiscus; Dale’s sister, Evelyn; and Dale’s brother, Robert.
