High school sports roundup: Freeport girls soccer on cusp of WPIAL section title; Butler thumps Allderdice
Freeport’s girls soccer team moved closer to a WPIAL Section 2-2A championship with a 2-1 win in double overtime over Burrell Monday night.
Samantha Liput scored the game-winner after Camryn Woods found the net in regulation.
Elena Jenkins and Woods both had an assist.
The Yellowjackets (10-1-1, 7-1-1) can wrap up the section crown with a win at Knoch on Wednesday.
Butler 6, Allderdice 0 — Cecelia Wolford scored twice in Butler’s victory.
Also scoring for the Golden Tornado (8-7) were Kat McGuire, Kara Lubinsky, Malina McElroy and Jess Calhoun.
Mars and Seneca Valley both dropped a first-round playoff match in the WPIAL Class 3A team tournament.
The 12th-seeded Planets lost 5-0 to No. 5 Fox Chapel.
Seneca Valley, No. 13, fell to No. 4 Upper St. Clair with a 5-0 decision.
Mars swept Avonworth 3-0 thanks in large part to 42 combined kills from Ella Nicotra, Lily Javor, Rylee Wooldridge and Cecilia Christy.
Gabi Weidemann dished out 37 assists in the win.
Slippery Rock 3, Lakeview 0 — The Rockets cruised by the Sailors via scores of 25-13, 25-10 and 25-15.
Marissa Metzka totaled eight kills for the Rockets, and CJ Sabo had seven kills and five blocks.
Zoey Pokrantz contributed nine assists to the win and Lyla Runtas six digs.
A-C Valley 3, Punxsutawney 0 — The Chucks had no answer for Maddy Dehart and her 16 kills.
Lexi Altman added four kills and 11 assists, Ava Snyder five kills and Grace Agostino four kills and four aces.
The Falcons swept Punxsy by scores of 25-14, 25-16 and 28-26.
Grove City 3, Karns City 0 — Regan Schmoll and Ashley Mayer both had five kills for the Gremlins in this loss.
