Police suspect drunken driving in turnpike crash
State police in Gibsonia said they believe an Evans City man was driving under the influence of alcohol when he crashed Sunday afternoon on the turnpike in Cranberry Township and was flown to a hospital with suspected severe injuries.
Andrew J. Graney, 36, of Evans City, was driving east on the turnpike at a high rate of speed and lost control of his car at 2:44 p.m., police said. The car struck a guardrail along the right shoulder and swerved back into all three traffic lanes in front of a Peterbilt commercial truck, police said.
The truck, driven by Andrew T. Russell of Minnesota, hit the driver’s door on Graney’s car and stopped two-tenths of a mile from the point of impact. Graney was trapped in his car and was extricated. All eastbound lanes were closed for about two hours due to the crash, police said.
Graney had suspected severe internal injuries and was treated at the scene by Cranberry Township Emergency Medical Services before he was flown to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, police said.
Police said they believe Graney was operating under the influence and that evidence at the scene indicated heavy alcohol use. Charges are pending the results from laboratory blood tests, and the investigation is ongoing, police said. As of Tuesday, no charges have been filed against Graney.
The Cranberry Township Volunteer Fire Company and EMS, Adams Area Fire District, Marshall Township Volunteer Fire Department from Allegheny County and Pennsylvania Turnpike maintenance crews also responded to the crash.
