St. Wendelin School students were among others across Butler County last week to gather items for victims of Hurricane Helene.

The donated supplies, which range from day-to-day essentials to emergency items, were to be delivered to Krill Recycling, which has been managing a larger collection of donations bound for the affected region.

In addition to physical donations, the community collected cash donations, which were used to purchase batteries. The project was initiated by a sixth-grade student.

Lee Dittman, a fourth-grade teacher at Saint Wendelin, praised the effort as a “wonderful teachable moment for all of our students.”

“Not only are they learning the importance of helping others, but they are also seeing how their actions, no matter how small, can contribute to a bigger cause,” Dittman said.

Luke Williams, a third-grader, expressed pride in the ability to help.

“These donations may not help a lot, but I hope it helps a little,” he said.
