Penn Township is warning residents to stay vigilant after multiple residents reported sightings of bears in the township, as well as Butler Township, over the past week.

Bear sightings have been reported on Old Plank Road, Crisswell Road, Dutchtown Road, and around Thorn Creek by users on social media, while a statement by Penn Township police reports that bears were also sighted around Dinnerbell Road.

In a statement posted to Penn Township’s website, the bears that have been spotted are described as “an ear-tagged black bear sow and two cubs.” An additional cub was reportedly struck and killed by a vehicle on Saxonburg Road last month.

The Pennsylvania Game Commission has a set of six “BearWise” tips to keep themselves, their family, and their pets safe if they encounter a bear at home. These are to never feed or approach bears; secure all food and garbage; remove all bird feeders; never leave pet food outside; clean outdoor grills; and alert neighbors to the situation.

In addition, the game commission warns dog owners to keep their dogs away from bears to avoid a confrontation that could result in injury or death to the dog.
