High school sports roundup: Late goal lifts Karns City boys past Mercer

Mason Bell’s second goal of the game came with one minute left in double overtime to earn for Karns City a 2-1 boys soccer victory Wednesday at Diehl Stadium.

Josh Peters and Carter Ritzert chipped in with an assist.

Brock Dittman made 18 saves for KC (6-9-1).

Mason bell scored with 1 minute left in double OT on a breakaway in the bottom left corner.

Mars 2, Armstrong 0 — Sean Scanlon and Max Davis both scored for the Planets on Tuesday.

Hickory 3, Slippery Rock 2 — Logan Berry and Alex Cagle both scored for the Rockets on Tuesday.

Girls Soccer

Karns City’s 5-0 victory over Brockway was highlighted by two goals apiece from Layla Colsey and Phoebe Brandon.

Hanna Dailey added one goal for the Gremlins (12-4) while assists went to Sarah Dodd (3) and goalkeeper Savanna Prescott.

Freeport 4, Knoch 0 — The Yellowjackets (11-1-1, 8-1-1) put the finishing touches on the Section 2-2A championship with this victory.

Peyton Los, Addyson Kristofik, Elena Jenkins and Alyssa Cooper scored Freeport’s goals. Sam Liput, Camryn Woods, Tess Hanak and Los each had an assist.

Alyssa Alcorn earned the shutout.

Girls volleyball

Karlee Buterbaugh dropped 14 kills, but Knoch fell to Freeport 3-1 on Tuesday.

Kenzie Kurtz added eight kills for the Knights (7-6, 3-4).

Freeport stats were not available.

Mars 3, Highlands 0 — Cecilia Christy, Lily Javor, Rylee Wooldridge, Ella Nicotra and Hailey Duker combined for 47 kills for the Planets on Tuesday.

Gabi Weidemann had 43 assists and Nicotra added nine aces on the night.

Karns City 3, North Clarion 1 — The Gremlins received 12 kills apiece from Regan Schmoll and Naomi Venesky in this victory over the Wolves on Tuesday.

Venesky added five blocks and 12 digs, Addison Fox 16 assists and 11 digs.

Union 3, Forest Area 1 — Kolstin Wetzel registered 10 kills and three aces in this Tuesday win for the Damsels.

Kya Wetzel added six kills and 24 digs, Brailagh Claypoole five aces and 38 digs, Lilly Hayden 21 assists and 20 digs.
