High school sports roundup: North Catholic boys golf wins WPIAL title

North Catholic’s boys golf team barely squeaked by Greensburg Central Catholic in winning the WPIAL Class 2A Boys Golf Team Championship on Thursday at Cedarbrook Gold Golf Course in Belle Vernon.

The Trojans totaled a 419 at the event, edging out the Centurions by one stroke. Shady Side Academy finished third with a 424 and McGuffey had a 429.

North sophomore Chris Faber shot a 79, while classmates Dylan Murray (81) and Eric Proie (83) helped. Junior Ben Kandravy carded an 87 and senior Luke Lamb an 89.

On the girls’ side — at the Cedarbrook Red Golf Course — the Trojanettes finished third with a 406. Riley Kontul paced North with a 90. Shady Side Academy won the crown by scoring a 387.

Girls tennis

Top-seeded North Catholic advanced to Monday’s WPIAL Class 2A team semifinals by downing No. 9 Winchester Thurston 5-0 at Cranberry Township Park on Thursday. The Trojanettes will face No. 5 Oakland Catholic next.

Boys soccer

A bundle of North Catholic players got on the scoreboard Thursday night as the Trojans won a section game against Leechburg 13-1.

Arthur Mendonca and Justin Garvey both tallied hat tricks, while Gabe Nonino, Brody Kennedy, Austin English, Jack Spirnak and Michael Riley also scored. Kelden Hufnagel had a pair of markers, as well.

North travels to Hampton for a non-section clash on Saturday.

Girls soccer

Behind great offensive nights by Hanna Dailey, Phoebe Brandon and Katelyn VanDyke — who combined for six goals and four assists — Karns City downed Keystone 8-1 on Thursday night.

Layla Colsey and Bree O’Donnell both added scores.

Girls volleyball

Brynn Cornibe had nine kills and Channing Popovich six kills, but Butler fell to North Catholic in three sets on Thursday night. The scores were 25-22, 25-16 and 25-17.

Slippery Rock 3, Sharon 1 — Marissa Metzka had 26 kills and Zoey Pokrantz 16 assists as the Rockets won by scores of 20-25, 25-17, 25-19 and 25-18.

Mars 3, Valley 0 — Cecilia Christy, Rylee Woolridge and Ella Nicotra combined for 38 kills in the Planets’ win. The scores were 24-14, 25-13 and 25-9.

Seneca Valley 3, Pine-Richland 0 — No further details were provided for this Raiders victory.

Boys Soccer

Mars defeated Knoch 2-1 on Thursday night. Miles Frazier and Frank Knezovich scored for the Planets, while Will Parisi netted the Knights’ lone goal on a penalty kick.

Slippery Rock 8, Greenville 0 — Max Kovacik had a hat trick, Caleb Clark a pair, and Zach Lasko, Nathan Clark and Connor Metheney one each in this shutout win. Josh Book and Ryan Strother combined for the clean sheet.
