Electrical outage interrupts classes, homecoming events at SRU
An electrical outage prompted changes to Slippery Rock University’s classes and homecoming events on Friday, Oct. 11.
The university issued a two-hour-delayed opening and moved many classes online. Power was restored shortly after 3 p.m.
Buildings impacted by the outage included six classroom buildings on lower campus, seven residence halls, Boozel Dining Hall, Bailey Library and the university’s Smith Student Center, where a number of homecoming events were scheduled.
Also without power were the Aebersold Recreation Center, Jack Critchfield Park and the Campus Success Center, formerly the University Union.
Some homecoming events scheduled Friday were relocated to upper campus or outdoors, according to campus emails.
The outage was reported about 7:30 a.m., according to Justin Zackal, communication specialist for the university.
Campus facilities staff located the site of the malfunction and restored power, he said, though the cause of the outage is still unknown.
“There is no indication of destruction or downed lines,” he said.
Access to student residence halls was not interrupted, thanks to battery backup of door key units, he said.
