Butler County’s needy residents will greet cooler weather with warmer feet, thanks to a donation coordinated by the Butler County Democratic Committee.

Nearly 1,000 pairs of new socks were collected at the annual Demstock event, a gathering of Democrats from northwestern Pennsylvania, hosted by the committee Aug. 23-24 at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds in Brookville, Pa.

Demstock features regional food, booths for groups and local businesses, and a chance to meet area politicians, but it also encourages charity and community service, Butler County Democratic Committee Chair Catherine Lalonde said.

This year’s beneficiary was Catholic Charities Diocese of Pittsburgh, Butler County Outreach.

“The committee selected Catholic Charities to receive the donation because the organization provides housing and shelter assistance to at-risk members of the Butler community,” Lalonde said.

Socks were an intentional choice, she said.

“Demstock organizers suggested attendees donate socks after learning that they are among the most frequently requested items by people in need, especially the homeless,” she said.

Previously scheduled at the Butler Farm Show grounds, the event was moved to Jefferson County following the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump on July 13.
