High school sports roundup: Mars volleyball sweeps Knoch, stays perfect in WPIAL section

Mars remained unbeaten in section girls volleyball play with a sweep of Knoch on Tuesday.

The Planets topped the Knights by scores of 25-17, 25-21 and 25-11.

Seniors Lily Javor and Ella Nicotra led Mars' attack, both contributing 10 kills and combining for nine aces. Gabi Weidemann had 35 assists for the Planets (13-4, 9-0).

Karlee Buterbaugh had 10 kills and Kenzie Kurtz added six kills for Knoch (7-8, 3-6).

North Allegheny 3, Butler 0 — Audrey Lehman totaled 11 kills and 10 digs for the Golden Tornado. Brynn Cornibe and Raina Lewandowski both added four kills.

Mercer 3, Slippery Rock 2 — The Mustangs edged the Rockets by scores of 16-25, 25-22, 27-25, 18-25 and 17-15.

Marissa Metzka tallied 28 kills in defeat, Zoey Pokrantz 25 assists.

North Catholic 3, Seneca Valley 1 — The Trojanettes won by set scores of 25-15, 24-26, 25-16 and 25-21.

North Catholic improved to 12-2 (6-2 section), while the Raiders fell to 8-7 (3-5).

Cranberry 3, Karns City 0 — Noami Vesnesky had a team-high eight kills to go along with a block and three digs in the loss.

The Gremlins were swept by set scores of 25-9, 25-23, 25-16. Addison Fox chipped in 12 assists, nine digs and an ace, and Abigail Galan had five kills and a block, dig and ace.

Hockey

Freeport scored three times in the third period Monday to beat Butler 6-3 at Frozen Pond Arena.

Aiden Bauman scored two of the decisive goals on the power play, which came in a four-and-a-half-minute stretch. Landen Kozma also scored during the run, his second of the game, and had an assist on Bauman’s second goal.

Butler’s Jase Renwick scored twice.

Luke Laboda stopped 36 of 39 shots in Freeport’s win. The Yellowjackets improved to 1-1, and the Golden Tornado fell to 0-2-1.

Mars 16, Richland 0 — Grant Weaver had a hat trick and assist as the Planets improved to 4-0.

Jack Weaver and Ethan Vactor each had two goals and two assists. Nine other players scored, with Gavin Stevenson and Max Zagorski pocketing a goal and two assists.

Carter Gallagher stopped all four shots he faced.

Cross country

Slippery Rock girls swept the top five spots and beat Wilmington 15-44 as Kasey Yeager won in 22 minutes, 33 seconds.

Leah Perez (22:49) and Rebecca Springirth (23:29) finished second and third, respectively. The girls improved to 5-2.

The boys, meanwhile, fell 19-42. Hunter Doerflinger was the top Rocket runner, finishing second in 19:35.

The boys are 3-4 heading into Saturday’s MCAC Regions 1 and 2 Invitational.

Boys soccer

Hampton beat Knoch 8-1. Jacob Murdie had the Knights’ lone goal off an assist from Austin Friedline.

Mars 5, Shaler 0 — Zack Angoff recorded a hat trick in the Planets’ final game before WPIAL playoff brackets are announced.

Girls tennis

The WPIAL Girls Tennis Team Championships were delayed another day due to weather. The Class 2A and 3A semifinals will now be held Wednesday, with the championships and third-place matches set for Thursday.

No. 1 North Catholic has advanced to the 2A semifinals.
