Cranberry Township readies for Great Lawn opening

Much of the previously unoccupied space in front of the Cranberry Township Municipal Center will soon be a permanent hub for residents who appreciate the outdoors.

The Armstrong Great Lawn Project, which was chosen as the township’s Community Chest Project of the Year, is nearing completion.

Supervisors are prepared to hold an initial ribbon cutting for the new outdoor space on Nov. 21, a day before the township’s annual Santa’s First Stop celebration.

“It’s going to be another great community gathering space for leisure activities,” said township manager Dan Santoro. “It’ll also be for activating engagement in that space for movies or concerts on the lawn or parks and recreation programs. When it’s not being used, it’ll be a more passive recreation green space in the township. Just a great public space is how I would describe it.”

The project transformed about two and a half acres into a public park that will receive plenty of attention during the warmest months of the year. A children’s playground also was added on the west side of the building.

While the November ribbon cutting marks a significant milestone for the project, Santoro said the township is planning a much larger recognition in the spring of next year.

“That Thursday night is more of a soft opening,” he said. “We’re going to plan for a more significant event in the spring. That’s when all the planting and flowers will be done. We’re not going to get any of that kind of stuff growing here this late in the season.”

At a recent township meeting, supervisors approved a contract award for interior signage and an exterior electronic sign to Advance Sign Company in the amount of $148,270.

While the interior signs are set to be installed sooner, the outdoor LED sign that will display messages and event reminders won’t be complete until sometime in the spring of 2025.
