Pennsylvania American Water worked at emergency repairs on a water main break Thursday, Oct. 17, at two sites on North Washington Street in Butler, prompting the temporary closure of the Butler YMCA.

A water main break was first reported on North Washington Street Wednesday evening, and it was reported again by Pennsylvania American around 9:30 a.m. Thursday.

An alert from the water company advised residents of North Washington Street, between West North and Federal streets, that they may experience discolored or cloudy water, low water pressure or no water pressure at all during the repair process.

If the water is discolored, run the cold water taps only, at the lowest level of the house for three to five minutes until the water runs clear, according to the water company.

Repairs were expected to take about seven hours to complete.

The Butler YMCA opened Thursday, but closed from noon until around 5 p.m., while the water main break was repaired. The YMCA had to close Wednesday evening because of the water main break.

A photo of the water main break, submitted Wednesday to the Butler Eagle, showed water spewing high into the air on Penn Street.

An Eagle staff member said he saw water flowing onto West Penn Street when he arrived to the building at around 4 a.m. Thursday.

Brian White, superintendent of Butler Area School District, said water at Emily Brittain Elementary, which is on North Washington Street, was shut off for about 20 minutes. The school remained open throughout the day.
