Embrace facts and truth

I've been talking to a lot of voters the last weeks. I'm awe-struck by the contrasts of versions of the truth. So much so that it makes me think that our most important issue is getting at the truth. We know we can't have the democracy we love unless it is based entirely on what's true.

I ask people where they go to get the whole truth and nothing but the truth. They often say to their favorite TV news station, to social media or to like-minded friends. People strong in their beliefs about what's true might believe the exact opposite of others who are equally strong in their own. Both can't be correct and true. How can we create a “more perfect union” in a climate that chaotic?

I have the answer — believe in our democracy, in self rule by the people and not by a king or a dictator. We all agree on that. And, in our Constitution which we cherish, know we can change it if we want to, and that we're most fortunate to have one that people in other countries yearn to come here to enjoy, to live, work, raise their children, and share with us.

Let's shut out the noise. Embrace those absolute truths. Always speak the truth. It's all you need. It makes us the greatest country on Earth and all of us winners in the truth argument.
