Owen Bish, Max Gallagher lead Union/A-C Valley football’s dominant run game in win over Moniteau

RIMERSBURG — Finish strong.

That’s the message Moniteau football head coach Bob Rottman has for his team heading into its final game of the season in search for its first win after falling to Union/A-C Valley on Friday night 36-6 at Union High School.

“There is a lot of growth you can’t see from the scoreboard,” Rottman said. “I saw the younger kids fill in throughout the game.”

Getting underclassmen experience now is something Rottman feels will be beneficial moving into next season with just five seniors on the team this year.

Union/A-C Valley (6-3) also is looking to finish its season on a winning note, with its playoff hopes still up in the air, but getting a bounce-back win against the Warriors (0-9) is certainly a step in the right direction after falling to Brockway last week 41-20.

“The kids played really hard,” Falcon Knights head coach Dan Reed said. “I thought we ran the ball really well.

“We don’t really know where we are when in comes to the playoffs. I think we are going to qualify, but we don’t know how it’s going to play out yet.”

The Falcon Knights ended the day with 362 yards rushing against the Warriors, behind the legs of two 100-yard rushers in quarterback Owen Bish and running back Max Gallagher.

Moniteau could not muster much with the running game, but the passing game showed signs of promise behind the arm of junior Brendin Sankey, who threw for 142 yards, including a 76-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Thompson in the fourth quarter.

“Sankey is a fighter,” Rottman said. “There are still some little things as a quarterback he can work on. Maybe a little quicker putting his foot in the grass and throwing the ball. Little things like that. He is that quarterback that is going to try to make a play happen until he can’t.”

Injuries plagued both teams during the contest, with Warriors running back Kole Scott making an early exit in the game.

Rottman said he has not heard what Scott’s injury is or the severity of it.

For the Falcon Knights, Bish exited the game early in the second half and Gallagher had to step into the quarterback role.

“Gallagher had never taken a snap at quarterback in practice, but stepped in and ran the offense really well,” Reed said.

Up next for the Falcon Knights is a visit to Reynolds on Thursday to help improve its playoff positioning and secure a potential home game for the postseason.

The Warriors, though, are simply trying to build on what they have. They will look to send their seniors off on a high note Oct. 25 at home against Ridgway/Johnsonburg.

“What I told the guys after the game is what has happened in the past doesn’t matter at this point,” Rottman said. “We got one game. Finish our season strong with 100% effort in practice everyday and then leave it all on the field on Friday.”
