Karns City’s Chloe Fritch is on the cusp of a top-10 finish in the PIAA Class 2A Girls Golf Individual Championship.
The senior is tied for 10th after the first day Monday at Penn State Blue Course after a first-round 8-over 80.
She’s the top Butler County golfer so far during the two-day state championships, boys or girls. North Catholic freshman Riley Kontel is 25th with a 16-over 88.
St. Joseph’s Catholic leads the girls 2A field with a 1-over 73.
On the boys Class 2A side, A-C Valley/Union’s Joe Rapp and North Catholic’s Ben Kandravy sit in a tie for 55th after the first round.
The sophomore and junior, respectively, shot 11-over 83 at Penn State Blue Course.
Schuylkill Hven’s Alan Evans and Quaker Valley’s Ethan Dai are tied atop the boys leaderboard with a 4-under 68.

North Catholic cruised to a 6-0 win over No. 11 Southmoreland in the WPIAL Class 2A first round.

Mars beat Oakland Catholic 3-2 in the first round of the WPIAL Class 3A tournament.
No stats were available as of publication. The No. 6 Planets will face third-seed West Allegheny, which beat Laurel Highlands in the first round, in a Thursday quarterfinal at a sight and time to be announced.
Boys hockey
Anthony Trombatt and Brayden Hardsock scored in an overtime shootout, handing Butler a 4-3 win over Wheeling Park at Frozen Pond Arena.
Both scored within 12 seconds of each other in the second period to tie the game at 2-2, then Jase Renwick, on assists from Hardsock and Trombatt, netted another tying goal in the third period to force overtime.
