The play centers around the revenge Sweeney Todd has planned for those who wronged him and what happens to him when he tries to satisfy his compulsion for revenge and death.
The tale of Sweeney Todd first appeared in a penny dreadful series called “The String of Pearls: A Domestic Romance” in the mid-19th century.
The series was turned into a musical in 1979 by Stephen Sondheim and won a Tony Award for Best Musical and an Olivier Award for Best New Musical.
