Late bedtime possibly saves resident in early Tuesday morning Butler blaze

A late bedtime might have saved Adam McCoy’s life.

McCoy said he smelled smoke Monday evening, Oct. 21, but didn’t notice the flames shooting up over a wall in his backyard until around 1:15 a.m. Tuesday.

He likely wouldn’t have seen it if he hadn’t stayed up later than usual.

He probably won’t be able to live in his house at 305 Sterling Ave. in Butler for three to six months, but McCoy said he is trying to stay positive.

“It could have been so much worse,” McCoy said. “There were five trucks, it was a really quick response.”

Butler Bureau of Fire responded to the call at 1:15 a.m. Tuesday, crowding the avenue that connects West Penn Street to Cleveland Street with emergency vehicles. The flames burned the rear of McCoy’s home, as well as a deck in the backyard.

McCoy, who owns the house, was the only person home, and he was able to get his cat out of the house safely.

McCoy said the fire department told him that electrical issues may have started the fire.

Crews were on-scene for nearly an hour and 40 minutes fighting the fire.

McCoy said he has heard it will take months to repair the damage to his house.
