Late bedtime possibly saves resident from early Tuesday morning Butler blaze
A late bedtime might have saved Adam McCoy’s life.
McCoy said he smelled smoke Monday evening, Oct. 21, but didn’t notice the flames coming up from the wall of the deck in his backyard until around 1:15 a.m. Tuesday.
He likely wouldn’t have seen it if he hadn’t stayed up later than usual.
Because of damage done by the blaze, he doesn’t expect to live in his house at 305 Sterling Ave. in Butler for three to six months, but McCoy said he is trying to stay positive.
“It could have been so much worse,” McCoy said. “There were five trucks, it was a really quick response.”
Butler Bureau of Fire responded to the call at 1:15 a.m. Tuesday, filling the avenue that connects West Penn Street to Cleveland Street with emergency vehicles. The flames burned the rear of McCoy’s home, as well as a deck in the backyard.
McCoy, who owns the house, was the only person home, and he was able to get his cat out of the house safely.
McCoy said the fire department told him that electrical issues may have started the fire. He said Tuesday afternoon that he kept some power tools outside by the deck.
Crews were on scene for nearly an hour and 40 minutes fighting the fire.
McCoy said it will take months to repair the damage to his house.
