Mrs. Shirley Faye McCandless, 89, of State College, formerly of West Sunbury, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 20, 2024.

She was the daughter of Lee and Edith Hilgar of Euclid, Pa., born in Clay Township, Butler County on Aug. 1, 1935. She went to the one-room Euclid grade school and graduated from West Sunbury High School.

On June 6, 1953, she married Donald McCandless Jr. of Slippery Rock. They have three children, Sherri Schalk (Mark) of Charlotte, N.C., Joan Tillett of Apple Valley, Calif. and Donald L. McCandless (Jane) of State College.

Shirley was a homemaker most of her life. She worked at Allencrest Tea Room in 1953 and Danks ladies clothing store in 1954 in State College. In 1968, she went to beautician school and became a licensed beautician in Champaign, Ill. As a child, she went to the Nazarene Church, and for the rest of her life, she attended various Methodist churches in Illinois and Pennsylvania. She loved to sing in the church choir her entire life. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, playing cards with her friends and grandchildren, camping, and watching the Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers. Above all, she enjoyed spending time with her family.

She is survived by her husband, Donald; her three children; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; her sister, Dolores Glenn; and sister-in-law, Nellie Arblaster.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Leslie Hilgar and John Hilgar; and one granddaughter, Katherine Schalk.

MCCANDLESS — Family and friends of Mrs. Shirley Faye McCandless, who died Sunday, Oct. 20, 2024, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, at WILLIAM F. YOUNG FUNERAL HOME, 132 Main St., West Sunbury.

Additional visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 25, at St. John’s United Methodist Church, 244 Hallston Road, Slippery Rock, PA 16057. Funeral services will follow at the church at 11 a.m. with Pastor Earl Dykes officiating.

Private burial will be at West Sunbury Union Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to St. John’s United Methodist Church, 244 Hallston Road, Slippery Rock, PA 16057.
