Oakland Township to trial police coverage from Saxonburg
Oakland Township has struck a three-month trial intergovernmental agreement with the borough of Saxonburg, which will allow the Saxonburg Police Department to provide police services to the township.
The agreement goes into effect Thursday, Oct. 31, and will last through Feb. 6, 2025. The Saxonburg Police Department will provide 20-24 hours of service to Oakland Township per week.
In their newsletter announcing the new agreement, the township specified that the Saxonburg police will not outright replace, but supplement the coverage already offered by state police, “for whom we are grateful.”
The township also reassured residents that this change will not lead to a raise in taxes.
The Saxonburg department has a similar deal in place to provide police services to Summit Township, and it is currently in talks with Jefferson Township to possibly provide police services to them as well. Saxonburg also made a similar proposal to Clinton Township last month, which was turned down.
At their meeting on Jan. 6, 2025, the township board of supervisors will determine whether or not to extend the agreement with Saxonburg past the trial period.
