Children’s book talks of life-changing effect of becoming a parent
A relative of “The Berenstain Bears” author has written a children’s book of her own.
Kelly Conroy, of Cranberry Township, published her first book, “You Are My Everything,” which is meant for parents to read to their children ages 3 to 7.
She said the book’s theme will hit a note with everyone who has become a parent.
“It’s about how awesome babies are and how everything in your life changes once you have kids, because they make everything better,” Conroy said. “Every page talks about how much the child is loved.”
She was inspired to write the story after having the first of her two sons in 2008.
Conroy recalled how her son would smile at people as a very young baby, and they would smile back.
“It just made everyone happier, and I just wished that would last,” she said.
The 32-page book was illustrated by Abigail Hookham of the United Kingdom. It will be released on Nov. 6, but preorders can be made now.
Once it is released, “You Are My Everything” will be available everywhere books are sold, Conway said.
“It’s very exciting,” she said. “I’ve been working toward this for so long, and now, it’s actually happening.”
She said her mother’s maiden name was Berenstain, and Stan Berenstain was her grandfather’s first cousin.
“I guess, technically, he’s my first cousin twice removed,” Conroy said of her connection to the famous authors Stan and Jan Berenstain. “I never met him, but my mom did. I grew up thinking that the bears were my cousins.”
“I think they were kind of private people, though,” she said. “They lived in the Philadelphia area.”
Conroy said “The Spooky Old Tree” by her Berenstain cousins was one of her favorite books growing up, and her son memorized it while learning how to read.
She said she initially wanted to write a book about math, but found there are a plethora of books on that subject.
“Then I turned around and saw a whole wall of Berenstain Bear books, and I thought, ‘Oh, that’s my sign that maybe I should keep trying,’” she said. “I figured I have Berenstain blood.”
