High school sports roundup: Freeport volleyball still in mix
In danger of seeing its season come to an end, Freeport’s girls volleyball team rallied to win the final two sets in a WPIAL Class 3A quarterfinal playoff against No. 3 Chartiers Valley on Saturday.
The Yellowjackets (16-3) extended their season by scores of 25-20, 15-25, 22-25, 25-18 and 15-10.
Leah Schreckengost tallied 17 kills and Alaina Whitlinger 15 kills to lead the attack.
Jaisa Gaillot (32) and Caylee Zembrzuski (31) combined for 63 assists. Jayme Radvan added six aces and six blocks while Payton Woods contributed four kills and three blocks.
No. 6 Freeport will take on No. 2 Mars in a semifinal Wednesday at North Allegheny High School.
District 9 Class 1A Boys
Moniteau sophomore Payton Beck finished ninth in the championship race in Ridgway on Saturday, earning him a trip to Hershey for the PIAA title meet on Nov. 2. Beck finished in 17 minutes, 29.4 seconds, while Karns City’s Noah Weiland (13th, 17:38.5) and Griffin Booher (17:48.5) also qualified for states.
Moniteau finished eighth as a team with 201 points. Karns City was marked as an incomplete team at the meet, while Central Clarion (43 points) won and Cranberry (106) was the runner-up.
District 9 Class 1A Girls
Moniteau freshman Brinn Kirschner punched her ticket to the PIAA meet with an 11th-place finish of 21:21. Karns City’s Miley Mooney (20th, 22:29.4), a junior, missed out on joining her by about five seconds.
District 10 Class 2A Boys
Slippery Rock junior Hunter Doerflinger’s 16:55 time earned him a 21st-place finish at the title meet, held in Titusville.
District 10 Class 2A Girls
With an 18th-place finish of 20:20, Slippery Rock sophomore Kasey Yeager qualified for states. Teammate Leah Perez crossed the finish line 23 seconds later, helping the Rockets to fifth place as a team with 193 points.
Kathleen Virostek and Lauren Mealie both scored a goal as North Catholic stayed alive in the WPIAL Class 2A playoffs with a 2-1 victory over host Beaver in a quarterfinal playoff.
Simone Sharpless and Mikaela Canzan had an assist for the Trojanettes (15-3), who will face Quaker Valley in a semifinal Tuesday.
Beaver finishes the season with a record of 15-2.
South Park 1, Freeport 0 — The Eagles (15-4-1) earned this WPIAL Class 2A quarterfinal victory by topping Freeport in a shootout, 4-1.
Camryn Woods scored for the Yellowjackets (12-2-1) in the round of penalty kicks.
North Catholic dropped a 4-1 decision to Lower Moreland in the PIAA Class 2A team semifinals in Hershey.
North’s No. 2 doubles team of Ava Conley/Macaria Stall earned the team’s lone victory by scores of 6-2, 6-1.
Lower Moreland went on to defeat Scranton Prep for the state title.
