Bertha Stewart
Bertha Estella (McDeavitt) Stewart, of Grove City, formerly of Slippery Rock and New Wilmington, passed away at Quality Life Services — Grove City on Saturday, Oct. 26, 2024.
She was born on April 22, 1929, to Robert Earl and Elizabeth Ethel (Wimer) McDeavitt in West Liberty borough, Butler County. She married Richard Laverne “Dick” Stewart on April 2, 1954, and he preceded her in death on Oct. 1, 2000.
Bertha graduated from Slippery Rock High School in 1948. She first worked at Ord’s Drugstore in Slippery Rock and then worked in cafeterias in the Slippery Rock School District and Westminster College in New Wilmington. She was a member of Order of the Eastern Star in Grove City and the Order of the White Shrine. Bertha enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, gardening and camping. She attended New Life Baptist Church in New Wilmington and was active in the “Young at Heart” group at the church.
Bertha is survived by two children, son, D. Craig (Lynne) Stewart of Hermitage and daughter, Tammy E. (Steven) Emery of Slippery Rock; sister, Leah McDeavitt of Grove City; sister-in-law, Jennie Allison of Slippery Rock; five grandchildren, Clover, Adam, Marshall, Chad and Shayne; and eight great-grandchildren, Julia, Mitchell, Ronan, Layne, Travis, Trenton, Evan and Branden.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Richard; granddaughter, Amanda Emery; three brothers, Clair, and twin brothers, Earl and Paul; and five sisters, Mabel Ramming, Gilda Greenway, Opal Blakley, Ethel Campbell and Margaret McDeavitt.
STEWART — The family of Bertha Estella (McDeavitt) Stewart, who died Saturday, Oct. 26, 2024, will receive friends from 4 p.m. until the time of service at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1, at SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 421 New Castle St., Slippery Rock. Services will follow at 7 p.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Warren Sullivan, of the New Life Baptist Church in New Wilmington, Pa., presiding.
Interment will be in West Liberty Cemetery, West Liberty borough.
