Clinton Township establishes fire hydrant tax
Clinton Township supervisors approved an ordinance which paved the way for a new fire hydrant tax for residents at a monthly work session on Monday, Oct. 28.
According to the text of the ordinance, the tax will help the township pay for the cost of maintaining its fire hydrant system, which the township itself was previously paying for.
The new tax will be calculated by assessing all properties in the township that are within 780 feet of a fire hydrant, as permitted by Pennsylvania’s second-class township code.
The text of the ordinance states that the assessment will be “based upon the Township’s actual costs for the provision, maintenance, and operation of the fire hydrants within the Township,” and the amount will be “set forth by resolutions adopted by the Board of Supervisors.”
The new tax will take effect Jan. 1. According to the agenda from Monday’s meeting, the township estimates that the tax will generate $12,160.56 per year.
There was a public hearing on the tax prior to Monday’s meeting, but according to Clinton Township manager Ashley Kohley, no one chose to speak.
