How do I know if I need counseling?

Mental health affects how we think, feel and act. It determines how we handle stress, relate to others, and our ability to make healthy choices. Counselors support mental health by providing the quality support necessary on a one on one, confidential basis.

Our mental health can also change over time. When the demands placed on a person exceed their resources, their mental health is impacted. Counselors help support clients through difficult times when one is experiencing stress, anxiety, deep sadness, anger, and other negative emotions that are flooding one’s system.

This short questionnaire is a guide for one to decide if it’s time to seek counseling. If you answer yes to one or more of these questions, it is an indicator that a counselor can help.

  1. Do you often feel overwhelmed with stress and anxiety? Is it affecting your diet, sleeping habits, work, and/or family-partner dynamics?
  2. Are your responses disproportionate to the circumstances? Are you responding with rage, anger, tears, and resentment over the normal inconveniences of life?
  3. Are you isolating?
  4. Do you have repetitive, intrusive, and/or anxious thoughts?
  5. Have your loved ones noticed and commented on negative changes in your behavior?
  6. Do you lack motivation? Are you feeling apathetic or hopeless?
  7. Are you having difficulty resolving issues on your own, but resist out of embarrassment or shame to ask for help?
  8. Are you self medicating?
  9. Do you feel that you don’t matter?

Counselors are trained to listen deeply and respectfully. Counselors teach their clients skills which range from coping with family or work issues, recognizing and resolving trauma and past abuse, learning positive behaviors to transform deep seated anger, resentment, fear and grief. Dr. Cynthia Marshall has been trained and certified in 21st century counseling techniques as well as body/mind trauma resolution techniques.
