Brady Township resident calls on early morning woods fire
Residents of Staff Road in Brady Township fought a brush fire with a garden hose early Monday, Nov. 4.
Scott Thompson, a resident of Staff Road, said he woke up in the middle of the night to see light streaming through his blinds. He opened them to see the woods outside his house on fire, and he ran out to do what he could to keep the flames from spreading to his home.
“My wife called 911 and I ran out, I grabbed my garden hose and tried to spray it,” Thompson said. “I was afraid it would get in the upper branches of the trees.”
Fire departments arrived shortly after the Thompsons called 911, at around 2:30 a.m., and fought the fire for several hours.
Mike Pflugh, chief of Unionville Volunteer Fire Company, said it was too dark during the fire to estimate how much area was on fire in the woods. The cause of the fire is not yet known, but dry conditions and leaves covering the ground around Butler County have been contributing to brush fires over the past few weeks.
No one was injured during the fire, and the Thompsons’ house remained untouched by the fire.
Thompson commended the fire departments for their quick overnight response.
“It was a bit intense there for a couple hours; they were here until almost 5 a.m.,” he said. “I just couldn't thank them enough.”
In addition to Unionville, Slippery Rock Volunteer Fire Company, Prospect Volunteer Fire Department and West Sunbury Volunteer Fire Department also responded to the scene.
