Callery to dedicate veterans memorial Sunday
CALLERY — After three years of planning and construction, a veterans memorial located just outside the borough municipal building on Railroad Street is ready to be dedicated officially on Sunday — the day before Veterans Day.
An official ceremony will take place at 1 p.m. on that day, and according to borough Councilwoman Rose Marie Wirtz, the borough has extended invitations to the Butler VA and local Veterans of Foreign Wars posts.
One of the steps remaining is a copper plaque which, according to Councilwoman Crystal Huffman, will feature the names of those who helped assist in the construction of the memorial. This includes the Callery Volunteer Fire Department, which donated a pair of concrete benches that will sit on each side of the monument.
At one point, the memorial was planned to be finished around Memorial Day 2023, but completion was delayed by numerous issues, including shipping delays and misspellings on the bricks at the base of the monument.
