Police: 1 person dead, 1 accused of homicide following shooting Tuesday night
An argument led to the fatal shooting of a Butler man found lying on the street Tuesday night, according to Butler police.
Sean E. Williams, 37, of Bulter was charged Wednesday with criminal homicide in the death of Christopher Waggett, 47, of Butler. Waggett died after a single gunshot wound in the chest, police said.
Police were dispatched to the 200 block of American Avenue around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday for a report of man who had possibly been shot.
According to police, Williams was taken into custody Tuesday night following the altercation. Williams is being held in the county prison in lieu of $2 million bail. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Nov. 18.
Butler police said officers responded to a house on American Avenue at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday after a report of a shooting in the area. Upon arrival, police found Waggett on the ground outside, receiving treatment from bystanders.
Police then began trying lifesaving measures until members of Butler Ambulance got to the scene, but police said Waggett later succumbed to the chest wound from the single gunshot.
The shooting itself took place outside at the corner of American and North Sixth avenues. There were no other injuries reported.
According to an affidavit, Williams and Waggett were among a group of people inside a home on American Avenue when the two men got into an argument.
Waggett left, but returned, and he and Williams got into another argument. Wagget walked away, but a witness told police Williams took a gun from a woman’s purse and walked in the direction of Waggett, according to the affidavit.
Waggett said something to Williams and knocked a bottle out of Williams’ hand, and Williams then shot Waggett, according top the affidavit.
Williams left the scene, but was apprehended on West New Castle Street. Williams told police that Waggett made several threatening comments to him and then walked away to make a phone call, according to the affidavit.
He told police he was worried that Waggett had called to ask friends from his motorcycle club to harm him. Williams went back to the home on American Avenue, took a gun from a woman and walked toward Waggett, according to the affidavit.
Williams said he and Waggett argued again, and he felt something strike the side of his head before he shot Waggett, according to the affidavit.
Police are asking anyone with video or who witnessed the event to reach out to the Butler city police department via the Butler County 911 center at 724-287-7769. The incident is still under investigation.
