High school playoff tickets should be within reach of all fans
Fans expect to jump through hoops when getting tickets to attend any sporting event at major Pittsburgh arenas, where cash is not an option. It’s not expected by people cheering on local high school teams.
Some Mars Fightin’ Planets fans were surprised Tuesday evening, Nov. 5, to find neither cash nor credit card would buy them a ticket at the door to the PIAA girls volleyball playoff game at Mars Area High School.
Those rooting for the team from the general public didn’t all know they were required to register for a ticket and pay for it — and a service fee — online to see the Mars team continue its drive to a PIAA championship.
Instead of a table where fans usually buy tickets, a number of people stood with iPads to check in fans with online tickets. There was a sign with a QR code where people with the proper app on their phones — and the requisite computer skills — could complete the transaction.
While staffers earnestly tried to help or accommodate fans unable to complete the online purchase, supporting high school players should not come down to the ability to use an app. The PIAA needs to adjust its policy to accommodate all fans who come out to cheer on these young athletes.
During the WPIAL girls volleyball playoff games Mars played at the Mars high school, at the semifinal game at North Allegheny High School, and at the WPIAL championship the team won at Peters Township High School, fans were able to buy tickets with cash at the door and online.
“I understand it can be a little bit of a hassle for anyone not tech savvy. I would guess about 95% of fans are OK with it. We do have computers on standby if people need help,” Mars athletic director Matt Matusak told the Butler Eagle on Wednesday.
We congratulate the Mars Fightin’ Planets volleyball team on its success. With the team’s win Tuesday against District 6 champion Central Mountain in the first round, the Fightin’ Planets will next face Hampton on Saturday in the PIAA quarterfinal matchup.
“They love the ride,” Planets coach Tami Caraway told the Eagle after the game. “They look forward to getting in the gym and practicing, and they can’t wait to see what’s next.”
Neither can their fans. Hopefully, the PIAA will ensure that all the people who turn out to see these young athletes reap the rewards of their hard work and dedication that brought them to the championship level can sit in the stands and cheer them on.
