Mars woman charged in DUI crash with children in vehicle
A Mars woman is facing charges alleging she crashed her vehicle while driving drunk with her two children in the vehicle.
State police charged Leah S. Kaunert, 44, with endangering the welfare of children, driving under the influence of alcohol and four summary traffic violations following the Oct. 13 crash in Callery.
A witness reported seeing the vehicle swerving and changing speeds on Mars Evans City Road before it went off the road, into a ditch and rolled on to its passenger side around 4:50 p.m., police said.
Kaunert was not injured, but police detected a strong odor of alcohol on her breath and bloodshot and watery eyes while talking with her, and reported that her two children were in the vehicle, according to the affidavit.
Police said she showed signs of impairment during a field sobriety test, and that a breath test showed she had a blood alcohol content of 0.202%. A person is considered legally drunk with a blood alcohol content of 0.08% under state law.
