2 men charged in burglary
Two county men are facing burglary and theft charges following an October 2023 burglary at a Slippery Rock Township home.
State police charged Ryan L. Pengryn, 31, of Butler, and Kameron C. Myers, 22, of Chicora, with felony burglary and misdemeanor theft in October this year. Pengryn also has been charged with unauthorized use of an access device.
A Slippery Rock man came to the barracks in October 2023 and reported that his gun had been stolen from his vehicle, police said.
He told police that on Oct. 16, 2023, he was driving home on Kiester Road when he was flagged down by two men he didn’t know who said they had run out of gas and asked for a ride to a gas station, police said. He agreed and drove the men to an unknown location in Butler.
During the ride, the man in the front passenger seat gave the victim $10 for the ride and the victim asked the man to get his wallet out of the glove box, police said. The victim told police his Ruger 9 mm handgun was in the glove box, and he suspects the passenger took the gun while reaching for the wallet. He said he didn’t know the gun was missing until he returned home, police said.
After allowing police to process his vehicle, the victim reported that several items in the back seat did not belong to him. Those items were a bowling ball, hat and grinder, police said. The victim told police that one of the men he picked up was carrying a duffel bag.
Later on Oct. 16, a woman from Slippery Rock Township reported a burglary at her home. She told police she woke up and discovered items in her garage had been disturbed and her vehicle had been ransacked. She reported that a bowling bag, two bowling balls, bowling shoes, a debit card, five cordless drill batteries, liquor and vape pens were missing from the garage and vehicle, police said.
Police said one of the stolen bowling balls matched the description of the one found in the gun theft victim’s car, and the woman’s home is less than 3 miles from where the gun theft victim said he picked up the two men.
After the woman’s bank notified her about a fraudulent charge made on her card at a convenience store in Butler, police checked surveillance footage and found the man who made the charge, Ryan Lee Pengryn, was one of their suspects in the township burglary, police said.
Police said they interviewed Myers, the other suspect, after he reported his vehicle stolen, but he denied involvement in the burglary or gun theft.
After discovering that Myers vehicle had been towed, police said they obtained a search warrant and found some of the items Pengryn bought at the convenience store.
Myers is being held in the county prison in lieu of $50,000 bail and his preliminary hearing has been scheduled for Wednesday. Pengryn is not in custody.
