Marion Township sewer project done by Thanksgiving goal
Following the county commissioners’ approval Wednesday, Nov. 13, of the last change order for the Marion Township sewer project, officials declared the project finished by the Thanksgiving goal.
Paid for with Community Development Block Grant money, the $4 million project began in August 2023 and involved construction of a new treatment plant and connecting about 100 homes to the new system.
“Everybody’s hooked up. They’re on the septic system. Right now the contractors are just finishing the restoration. They should be done by the end of the week,” Wendy Leslie, county block grant coordinator, told the commissioners Wednesday.
She said final invoice from contractors are expected in the next couple weeks.
“The goal was to be done by Thanksgiving and we are right on target,” Leslie said.
The commissioners approved a $32,280 change order for additional piping needed for the installation of grinder pumps. Leslie said that is the final change order for the project and the cost includes credits for materials that were not needed.
She said restoration work was beautifully done.
“Job well done,” County Commissioner Kim Geyer said.
Leslie gave credit for the project to township residents for completing the household income survey that had to be submitted to qualify for the block grant money that paid for the project.
She said her office is conducting a similar survey in Chicora.
Chicora residents are being asked to complete the survey to determine if the borough qualifies for grant money to upgrade its public water system.
Volunteers are hand-delivering surveys to residents and the borough council is assisting by collecting the surveys, Leslie said.
To qualify for a Community Development Block Grant, at least 51% of the households must fall into the low or moderate income range, she said. Surveys are used to determine the income level because income questions were eliminated from the census in 2010, she added.
If the borough qualifies, the project will be included in the block grant application due next fall.
