Dr. Ira Baumgartel
Ira E. Baumgartel, M.D., 74, of Mars, died suddenly and unexpectedly at home on Saturday, Nov. 16, 2024.
Born Oct. 11, 1950, he was the son of the late Walter and Ethel Kennedy Baumgartel. He was the brother of Larry Baumgartel of Mars and the late Kenny and Marie Baumgartel and Linda Lees.
He was a proud 1969 scholar-athlete graduate of Mars Area High School, a 1973 graduate of Washington and Jefferson College, and a 1977 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He went on to do his internal medicine residency at the Western Pennsylvania Hospital, finishing in 1980. He was honored to open his internal medicine practice in Mars in 1981, to serve the community he loved.
Board certified in internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine, he served as medical director at St. John Lutheran Care Center, was on the medical staff at Passavant Hospital, and was the longtime Mars Area School District physician, where he spent many Friday nights on the sidelines under the lights. Ira retired in 2013 so he could spend more time on his tractors and with his beloved, amazing grandkids.
Surviving to cherish his memory are his best friend and wife of 46 years, Michele Fair Baumgartel; daughter, Dr. Jennifer Zangardi (Dr. Alfonso) of Shavertown, Pa.; and son, Michael Baumgartel (Dr. Kelley) of Mars. He was the adoring grandfather and playmate of grandchildren, Dominick, Lorenzo and Rita Zangardi and Jack Baumgartel.
A man of great faith, he was a lifelong Presbyterian, serving as an elder, clerk of session and adult Sunday school teacher, most recently serving as an elder at his true church home, Hampton Presbyterian Church. He looked forward to the Men’s Bible Study as well as another Tuesday Night Study.
In the true spirit of his selflessness, Ira is donating his body to science. There will be a memorial service to celebrate his incredible life.
The family would like to thank the Rev. Dr. Ted Martin for his immediate care of the family and for nurturing and walking alongside Ira in his unbroken faith journey. Additionally, special thanks to the Hampton Presbyterian Church family for their love and support.
