The executive director of In Toto Community Resource Center has stepped down as the nonprofit wades through difficult financial troubles.

Sydney Branby cited health concerns as the reason for stepping away from the Zelienople-based organization, according to Krystin Smith, the nonprofit’s program manager.

“This decision did not come easily, but after much reflection, it was made in the best interest of her well-being,” Smith said in an email.

According to a Form 990 — a nonprofit tax document — filed on behalf of the nonprofit, Branby’s resignation comes as In Toto struggles to sustain its mission of providing free and accessible support services to the community.

Financial constraints and operational hurdles have left the organization in dire straits, Smith said, and without appropriate funding, there’s potential for a drop-off in services or even a full-scale closure by the end of the year.

The organization is asking for the community’s support and is seeking dedicated people to join its board, particularly those with experience in leadership, fundraising or nonprofit management.

The center also is calling for donations and grassroots fundraising efforts to keep In Toto’s essential programs running.

“Toto has always been a place of support, understanding and compassion, committed to providing free and accessible services to those in need,” Smith said in her email. “We have strived to make a meaningful impact on the lives of many individuals, helping them navigate through difficult times. However, today we find ourselves in need of support from you, our valued community.”

In Toto’s website says its mission is to provide community-centered social support to those with increased risk of mental health struggles.

Founded as the Parents in Autism Resource Center in 2008, the organization has taken steps toward expanding its service by adding virtual programs in 2020 and acquiring the Empowering Moms Program, which supports new and expectant mothers.

In Toto also has been the beneficiary of several community events, such as last year’s Miracle on Main Street, where the organization was presented with a $5,000 check.

“We have always been proud to serve our community free of charge, and now, in our moment of need, we are turning to you to help us sustain this vital work,” the statement continued. “Toto has always been a community-driven organization, and we believe that together, we can overcome this challenge and emerge stronger.”
